Icon Books Press Release 27th September 2007

Hate your office? Bestselling author offers chance to escape

Malcolm Burgess – author of the bestselling I Hate the Office – is set to launch a website offering the UK’s frustrated, angry, embarrassed and overburdened office workers a chance to unload their troubles, and win an escape, if only a temporary one, from the hell of the 9.00 – 5.30 sentence.

http://www.ihatetheoffice.co.uk/ launches, along with the paperback publication of Malcolm’s book, on 12th October. He is keeping a blog, too – see http://ihatetheoffice.blogspot.com/

‘I’ve worked in all too many offices,’ says Burgess, ‘and I know the pain they cause. Unless it’s 4.30 on Friday, it’s always a long wait til the weekend and staying too long at the water cooler can’t make the time go any quicker. So I’m launching something that might just allow a little of that steam to be released. Office workers of the world, unite! You have nothing lose but your excessive biscuit-heavy diet and condescending IT support!’

The prize, supplied courtesy of travel company Great Getaways, is one four weekend breaks to France – see the website for more details.

About the book:

‘Happy to be back at work? If not, you may find solace here.’ Daily Express

Do you know the agony of the away day? The perils of Hot Desking, office politics, romances and parties? The sheer terror of work reunions and ‘teleconferencing’?

Office escapee Malcolm Burgess feels your pain. In this blackly hilarious A to Z of office life, he exploits the deep vein of cynicism and rebelliousness that runs through every office. The result is the essential weapon in the war against the modern horror of the 9.00 – 5.30 sentence.

‘Anyone who has worked in an office will have a wry grin, a grimace and even occasionally laugh out loud at some of the inspired observations in this book … highly entertaining.’ Personnel Today
